DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's swimming and diving team defeated the Air Force Academy on Friday afternoon 60-52 in dual meet action at Perkins Natatorium on the campus of SMU. The Mustangs (1-0) won the first four events to jump out an early lead and held off the Falcons for the season-opening win.
Head coach Eddie Sinnott featured each of his 10 newcomers in the meet with Alex Hetland, Luka Vrtovec and Michael Dmitriev all picking up wins. Hetland and Vrtovec were part of the winning 200 medley relay squad that finished in 1:33.85. Dmitriev touched the wall first in the 1000 free (9:19.33) in his first action as a collegiate swimmer. Vrtovec won his second event when he took the 100 fly in 51.40.
Senior tri-captain J.D. White won the 200 free in 1:43.89, while Per Nylin also collected a win for SMU, winning the 50 free in 20.92. Junior Ian Clark also helped the Mustang cause, taking first in the 100 back (51.60).
In the diving events, SMU's Philip Griffin won both the one-meter (321.98) and three-meter (321.83) to help collect 10 points for the Mustangs.
The SMU men's swimming and diving team returns to the pool this Friday, Nov. 11, when they host Wyoming at 5 p.m. at Perkins Natatorium. The meet will have livestats available on SMUMustangs.com.
