DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting North Texas Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field. With the loss, SMU falls to 3-2 on the season while North Texas evens its record to 2-2.
Sophomore forward Heather Hutyra scored all three goals for North Texas, beginning at the 18:30 mark off a long free kick. She added another goal at the 29:27 mark with a tap-in in the center of the box. SMU found itself down, 2-0, at intermission.
In the second half, SMU came out more energized and more aggressive in its offensive attack. But the Lady Eagles seemed to be in the right place at the right time and thwarted a number of Mustang attacks. SMU finally found the back of the net at the 83:49 mark as sophomore Kimber Bailey received a sweet pass from teammate Jena Lind and found the back of the net. SMU kept testing the Lady Eagle defense in the latter stages of the game, but North Texas solidified the win as Hutyra posted her third goal after winning a one-on-one match-up with SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter in the final minute of the game.
SMU dominated the stats, taking nine corner kicks compared to North Texas' three. SMU also outshot the Lady Eagles, 11-8, in the second half.
The Mustangs hit the road this coming weekend, traveling to Moraga, Calif., to participate in the Saint Mary's College Tournament. SMU takes on host Saint Mary's Friday evening and Cal Sunday afternoon.
