The SMU volleyball team fell to Rice tonight, 3-1 (30-25, 30-27, 27-30, 20-27). The Mustangs are now 13-13 on the season and 4-8 in Conference USA play. Three Mustangs posted double-doubles for the night.
Rachel Giubilato led with 20 kills, 15 blocks and two service aces while Caitlin Rainbird also notched a double-double with 18 kills and 10 digs. Natalie Peters compiled 13 kills, three blocks and five digs and Kendra Kahanek posted 13 kills and two blocks. Madison Hill posted 12 assists and 16 digs for her fourth consecutive double-double and Stefanie Kons made 49 assists, one ace, three digs, one block and one kill. Candice Davis posted 22 digs. Kara Cornelius made four kills and one block while Jenny Reyes had one assist and two digs.
In game one, Rice took the early lead and was able to stay ahead for the whole game, taking the 30-25, win. There were four quick ties in game two and then the Mustangs took the lead. SMU maintained the lead until the 25-25 mark where they had to hold Rice off, but could not keep them back as Rice tied the score at 26-26 and then made a late rally to seal the, 30-27, win.
Rice took the lead in game three but the Mustangs made a late five-point run in the game, knotting the score at 25-25. From there, the game saw two more ties before SMU took the upper-hand with three consecutive points to take the, 30-27, win. There were three quick ties in game four before Rice took over. The Owls held the Mustangs off for the, 30-27, win in the final game.
The Mustangs will take on Houston, Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
