Ft. Worth, Texas - The SMU women's soccer team continued its women's soccer bragging rights in the Metroplex with a 2-0 victory over TCU Thursday evening in Fort Worth. SMU now holds a 25-0-2 series history over the Frogs. With the win, SMU improves to 6-2-1 while TCU falls to 4-5-0.
In the first half, SMU controlled the game on both sides of the ball with an occasional TCU offensive attack. Junior Krystal Bailey got SMU on the scoreboard at the 44:32 mark with an angled kick off a pass from Marisa Schieda. It was Bailey's fourth goal of the season. The Mustangs, who outshot the Frogs, 10-6, went into intermission with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, SMU maintained its game plan, keeping the Frogs on the defense, but TCU managed to swing the momentum for a brief time, challenging the Mustangs defensively. But it was SMU that kept its composure and regained the momentum. SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter stopped any shot and every shot near the mouth of the net to thwart any TCU offensive attempts. At the 84:29 mark, SMU got an insurance goal by senior Olivia O'Rear after making a nifty move around a TCU defender and shot a left-footed ball past TCU goalkeeper Katy Buchanan.
Gunter recorded five saves enroute to her fourth shutout of the season.
SMU returns home for the first of three consecutive games at Westcott Field on Sunday, Sept. 24 against Oral Roberts. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
