COLLEGE STATION, Texas (SMU) - After breaking into the latest polls yesterday, the No. 25 SMU men's swimming and diving team toppled No. 24 Texas A&M tonight, 143-98. In a hotly contested rivalry that dates back to 1934, the Mustangs came out on top winning nine events as three Mustangs took two individual first-place finishes apiece.
The 400 medley relay team of Ian Clark, Alex Hetland, Justin Smith and Thomas Fadnes combined for a first-place time of 3:14.33 which is also the best time posted by a Mustang 400 medley relay this season. Pontus Renholm, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Denham and Jerr Merritt swam a time of 3:22.30 for third-place while Colton Ingraham, Grega Plevelj, Josh Cohen and Matt Hock clocked in at 3:30.45 for fifth-place.
Michael Dmitriev won the 1000 free with a season-best time of 9:17.33 while Chris Ginder posted a career-best time of 9:31.30 for fourth-place. Fellow teammate Travis Callaghan also swam a career-best time of 9:51.87.
Maverick Smalley posted a career-best time in the 200 free as he took first-place with a time of 1:39.48. Shane Milu placed third with a time of 1:40.06 while Nate Clark posted a career-best time of 1:40.08 touching in at fourth-place.
In the 50 free, Luka Vrtovec posted a first-place time of 20.05 while Jani Brackett swam a season-best time of 21.17 for fourth-place. Merritt touched the wall at 21.80 in seventh-place.
I. Clark won the 200 IM with a season-best time of 1:48.48 while Hetland coasted in for second-place with a time of 1:49.02. With a season-best time, Smith clocked in at 1:50.98 in fourth-place and Daniel Veale swam a career-best time of 1:57.34.
Smith swam a season-best time of 1:48.98 in the 200 fly coming in second-place while N. Clark followed in third with a season-best time of 1:50.58. Denham touched in at fourth-place as he clocked a career-best time of 1:53.07 and Josh Cohen stopped the clock at 1:58.51.
Vrtovec earned another first-place finish as he timed in at 43.94 in the 100 free. Thomas Fadnes followed in second with a time of 45.48 and Milu clocked a season-best time of 45.88 in third-place. Brackett timed a season-best time of 47.39.
Also notching another first-place finish was I. Clark in the 200 back as he touched in a career-best time of 1:45.52. Renholm followed in second-place with a time of 1:49.55 and Ingraham swam a career-best time of 1:53.94 in fourth-place.
In the 500 free, Smalley posted another first-place finish with a career-best time of 4:30.14 while Dmitriev touched the wall at 4:33.25 for second-place. Ginder just missed his career-best time of 4:39.41 when he came in sixth-place with a time of 4:39.42.
With a season-best time of 2:04.41, Johnson finished second in the 200 breast while Plevelj posted career-best time of 2:07.15 for fourth-place. Merritt timed in at 2:07.98 for fifth-place while Patrick Raschle came in at 2:11.07.
In the one-meter diving event, Preston Holcombe compiled a score of 279.00 for second-place. With a score of 245.71 on the three-meter boards, Holcombe finished fourth.
The Mustangs took another relay win in the 400 free relay as Milu, Hetland, Fadnes and Vrtovec touched in at 2:58.17 for the best time posted this season by a SMU 400 free relay team. N. Clark, Smalley, Denham and Callaghan touched the wall at 3:06.46 and Ingraham, Brackett, Veale and Cohen timed theirs at 3:14.49.
Next up for the Mustangs in the Conference USA Invitational in Houston, Feb. 14-17 where they will look to defend their title.
