DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team outshot the visiting UCF Knights, 13-11 - including a 7-3 advantage at halftime - but was unable to convert those shots into goals, falling, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field.
The Mustangs dipped to 5-5-1 on the season, 1-3-1 against Conference USA opponents. UCF improved to 9-2-2, 4-0-0 in C-USA games.
SMU dominated much of the first half, maintaining possession and keeping the Knights out of the SMU defensive third. But UCF's Danielle dos Saintos broke the drought in the 32nd minute, dribbling out of the left corner and crossing a pass to Brianna Schooley, who converted a 16-yard shot - UCF's first shot in the game - for the eventual game-winning goal. Then, in the 40th minute, UCF's Amanda Martorana stole a pass in the SMU end, pushed the ball past SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter and tapped in her first goal of the season.
After the intermission, dos Saintos was at it again, setting up Schooley for her second goal of the game in the 68th minute, and scoring the final two goals herself in the 69th and 74th minutes.
Senior midfielder Allison Brill led the Mustangs with three shots, while Jennifer Raad and Kim Peabody had two shots apiece.
The Mustangs go on the road next weekend, with road games Friday at UAB and Sunday at Memphis, before returning home Oct. 26 to face Rice. For ticket information and a complete schedule, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
