Mustangs Unable To Topple Wichita St., 4-2

TULSA, Okla. (SMU) - The No. 45 SMU women's tennis team was unable to topple No. 50 Wichita St. this afternoon as they fell, 4-2. This was the second match of the Oklahoma road trip for the Mustangs as they are now 6-2 on the season. Wichita St. remains undefeated as they handed Tulsa their first loss yesterday.

"They came out fighting and were solid all the way through their line-up," said head coach Lauren Longbotham. "It was a dog fight. All the matches were really close. I was glad of how we played singles but we need to come out better in doubles, I do not think we are playing to our potential there yet. You have to give all the credit to Wichita St., they were just the better team today. They came out really ready to play."

The Mustangs were not able to get going in doubles competition. Natalia Bubien and Claire Rietsch fell to Florentina Hanisch and Madina Rakhim, 8-4. Jennifer Chay and Pavi Francis took Anna Egorova and Stephanie Dalmacio into a hard fought tie-breaker at No. 2, but lost the close match as they fell, 8-7 (10-8). At No. 3, Kristen Reid and Monica Neveklovska could not pull over Lenore Lazaroiu and Jackie Richey as they fell, 8-1.

In singles action, Rietsch took a, 6-4, 6-2, win over Lazaroiu at No. 3 and Francis defeated Dalmacio, 7-4 (7-4), 6-2, posting the Mustangs two points. At No. 1, Bubien fell to Rakhim, 7-5, 6-4, and Georgia Marta fell to Egorova at No. 5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Reid could not over turn Browning at No. 6 as she fell, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Chay faced Hanisch at No. 2, but the match was not finished.

The Mustangs will conclude their three-match road trip in Tulsa, Okla., as they open conference play tomorrow against Tulsa.

"We are ready for our first conference match tomorrow against Tulsa," noted Longbotham. "We would like to finish this road trip with a win."
