DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team came away with a 4-2 victory in exhibition play over visiting Texas A&M-Commerce Sunday night at Westcott Field.
TAMU-Commerce scored the game's first goal at the 8:00 mark in the first half. But the Mustangs countered at the 17-minute mark when Kimber Bailey fed a diagonal pass to sister Krystal Bailey and poked a shot around TAMU-Commerce's goalkeeper, Jennifer Alvarado. SMU struck again at the 22-minute mark when junior Carley Phillips headed in an Allison Brill corner kick. Kimber Bailey angled in a shot deep in the box after a long free kick by Allison Brill with 11 minutes remaining in the half, giving SMU a 3-1 lead. TAMU-Commerce scored with just over eight minutes left in the half as Meagan Lasley punched on a centering pass by Bailey Geels. With 1:40 remaining in the half, Brill connected on a long shot which floated into the upper right corner of the net, upping SMU's lead to 4-2. The Mustangs took that 4-2 lead into halftime.
Even though there was no scoring in the second half, SMU dominated the flow of the game and controlled both sides of the ball. The Lions had flashes of offensive attacks, but it was the Mustangs who had the edge.
The Mustangs' final exhibition game is slated for Sunday, August 26 when the Oklahoma Sooners visit Westcott Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
