Birmingham, Ala. (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team leads a loaded field following two rounds of play at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at Old Overton Club. SMU is at 13-under par, posting scores of 278-269-547 to hold a two-shot lead over host Alabama. SMU's Kelly Kraft and Marc Sambol each carded 5-under 135s on day one and are tied for third.
SMU also got stellar performances from Draegen Majors and James Kwon, who shot 2-under 138 and 1-under 139, respectively. Max Buckley, the fifth man on SMU's roster, also had a good day, shooting 145 to tie for 35th.
The loaded field includes 12 teams, five of which are ranked in the Golf World/NIKE Golf Coaches' poll and/or the Golfweek Sagarin Rankings. Alabama, the host and the tournament's defending champion, leads the list of ranked teams in both polls, ranking No. 8 in the Coaches' poll and No. 10 in the Golfweek rankings. Baylor is ranked No. 5 in the Golfweek rankings. UNLV is No. 8 in the Golfweek rankings and No. 21 in the Golf World/Coaches' rankings. Auburn is ranked No. 20 in the Coaches' poll and No. 39 by Golfweek, and UAB is ranked No. 46 by Golfweek.
The tournament is named for former Crimson Tide golfer Jerry Pate, who was the 1974 U.S. Amateur and World Amateur Champion and played on the PGA Tour. He is currently playing on the Champions Tour.
The teams will play the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
