NOTRE DAME, Ind. (SMU) - The SMU cross country team finished in sixth place at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday at the Notre Dame nine-hole golf course, besting a number of nationally-ranked teams. The Mustangs, who finished first among South Central Region teams, bested six top-25 teams - No. 10 Illinois, No. 13 Providence, No. 18 New Mexico, No. 19 Rice, No. 21 Texas Tech and No. 25 Boston College.
SMU was led again by sophomore Silje Fjortoft, who finished the 5K course in 16:42. Fjortoft was the fastest finisher among all underclassmen. Rachael Forish ran a solid race to take 41st in 17:22, while freshman Monika Korra also claimed a top-50 finish, taking 49th in 17:31. Other SMU finishers were Claire Hardwick (17:44/72nd), Jessa Simmons (17:47/77th), Samantha Means (18:20/127th) and Sierra Anderson (18:20/129th).
No. 3-ranked Florida State finished first as a team in the women's race, while North Carolina's Brie Felnagle won the women's individual crown in a course-record time of 16:21.
