HOUSTON (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team fought back to overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit on freshman midfielder Dylan Jordan's first career goal and outshot their hosts, 15-12, but allowed a late goal to fall to Rice, 2-1.
Both teams came out firing, with SMU (3-7-1 overall, 1-2-0 in Conference USA games) outshooting Rice (6-4-0, 2-1-0) in the first half, 10-7. The Owls got on the scoreboard first, when Kate Edwards converted a penalty kick in the 16th minute, and held their 1-0 lead until the halftime intermission.
Jordan tied the game for the Mustangs in the 59th minute when she headed in her first goal as a collegiate player off an assist from sophomore Lauren Shepherd, the reigning Conference USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week. The assist gave Shepherd five points this season, pulling her to within one of the team lead.
The Ponies have a chance to bounce back Sunday when they travel across town to face the University of Houston at 1 p.m. Sunday. After two more road games next weekend at Marshall and East Carolina, SMU returns home to host Memphis at 7 p.m., Oct. 17.
