WACO (SMU) - The 19th-ranked SMU cross country team posted a gutty fourth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country South Central Regional Saturday, November 15, at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. Senior Rachael Forish led SMU, taking 12th in the 6K race in 21:07.0.
SMU's Norwegian tandem of Silje Fjortoft and Monika Korra was hampered by the flu this week, but fought through to take 15th and 29th, respectively. Freshman Claire Hardwick bolstered the Mustangs' team score with an impressive 18th-place finish. Jessa Simmons rounded out the SMU scorers with a 31st-place showing. Ilyssa Pettigrew and Sierra Anderson also ran for SMU on Saturday and took 38th and 43rd, respectively.
"The flu finally caught up with Silje and Monika, but they battled through it and really gutted it out," said SMU Head Coach Dave Wollman. "I was also extremely proud of how our other runners stepped up and was pleased with our overall showing today."
While only the top two teams in each NCAA Regional receive automotive berths into the NCAA Championships, SMU has a strong case to earn one of 13 at-large bids when the NCAA announces the Championship selections on Monday.
The NCAA Championship Meet will take place in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday, Nov. 24.
