PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (SMU)--The SMU men's tennis team defeated San Francisco Friday afternoon in the third annual Pebble Beach Collegiate Classic. The Mustangs (11-6) downed the Dons, 6-1, in the first match of the weekend.
The Mustangs took the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. At No. 1, Alex Skrypko and Robin Fahgen extended their win-streak to three matches, defeating Falko Huettenberger and Asaf Cohen, 8-4. Oivind Alver and Chris Hooshyar picked up a win at No. 3, downing Mitch Del Rosario and Torin Ching, 8-3.
In singles, the Mustangs won all but one match. David Kuczer (11-3) extended his winning streak to three matches, beating Thong Tu in three sets. Kuczer started down, dropping his first set, 6-3, but rallied to take the next two, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2, Fahgen defeated Cohen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Skrypko continued his recent success, winning his fourth straight match by downing Nachbauer in a straight-sets win of his own, 6-3, 6-2. In the fourth slot, Hooshyar dropped his first set to Einar Hart, 7-6, but fought back to notch a win in the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 6, Darren Walsh remained perfect on the season, winning his fifth match by notching an impressive come-from-behind win over Del Rosario, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Ponies' only loss of the day came at No. 5. Alver pushed his match to three sets, but couldn't hold on for the win, falling to Huettenberger, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
"This was a really hard-fought win," said head coach Carl Neufeld. "We're excited and energized by it. We lost our first sets in four of our singles matches and came back to win in three of them. I was most impressed with our fight and comeback on those three matches. Our doubles are getting better and better. Our fight on those three matches was really the deciding factor in this match."
