DENTON, Texas (SMU)-SMU men's swimming and diving defeated Utah in dual meet competition at North Texas in Denton, Texas on Saturday, January 10 with a score of 161-121. SMU won nine out of eleven events during competition, including a medal-stand sweep of the 50 free.
The Mustangs started off competition with handy victory in the 200 medley relay, clocking in at 1:31.77, four seconds ahead of the field. SMU also placed second in the event.
In the 1000 free, freshman Mitchell Thomson took the title with a second-best time of the season, 9:29.13. Senior Chris Ginder claimed third. Thomson came back for a second win, this time in the 500 free, where he pulled in five seconds ahead of the competition with a time of 4:37.61.
Junior Maverick Smalley pulled out the win in the 200 free event, swimming a season-best 1:41.95. In the men's 100 back, junior Pontus Renholm scored a first place finish touching in at 50.45, while freshman James Shake came in behind Renholm with a time of 52.37.
The 200 back was dominated by the Mustangs, with Renholm touching in first with a time of 1:53.11. Shake was right on his heels, though, turning in a time of 1:53.40. In diving competition, sophomore Matthew Culbertson won titles in both the three-meter an one-meter events.
In the 100 breast, senior Grega Plevelj eked out the win against Utah's John Baque with a time of 57.81, less than one second ahead. Junior Ed Downes made quick work of the 200 fly, coming in at 1:51.41, while freshman Blaz Korosec touched in third. Korosec went on to take the 100 fly win with a time of 51.04, and Shake pulled in next at 51.17.
The Mustangs swept the 50 free event. Luke Vrtovec took the title with a time of 20.62, while junior Thomas Fadnes and sophomore Greg Doughty finished second and third respectively. Fadnes claimed his own victory in the 100 free, clocking a time of 46.06.
Utah claimed the 200 breast, but SMU came in second and third. Junior Jerr Merritt touched in second with a time of 2:12.16, and senior Daniel Veale came in a second later for third.
Downes easily conquered the 400 IM, clocking a first place finish in 3:59.89. Smalley came in behind his teammate, touching in at 4:05.71. The Mustangs finished off competition by touching the wall ahead of the Utes in the 400 free relay, swimming a time of 3:08.34.
SMU men's swimming and diving will return to competition on Thursday against Arizona State at 7:00 p.m. in Joe Perkins Natatorium.
