DALLAS (SMU)-SMU men's swimming and diving defeated Arizona State in head to head competition in Joe Perkins Natatorium on Thursday, January 15 by a score of 136-94. It was a busy night for the Mustangs, with several freshmen setting career-best times and several more setting season-best marks.
The Mustangs started off the meet with a sweep of the medal stand in the 400 medley relay, with a team of junior Pontus Renholm, senior Grega Plevelj, freshman Blaz Korosec, and junior Thomas Fadnes taking the win with a time of 3:23.37.
Freshman Mitchell Thomson swam to a season and career-best time in the 1000 free, clocking in at 9:23.28. Senior Chris Ginder pulled in third. Ginder also placed second in the 500 free with season-best time of 4:40.10.
Hauling in a first place finish in the 200 free with a career, season, and team-best time of 1:40.81 was freshman newcomer Robin Andreasson. Junior Maverick Smalley also bested his season time in a third place finish, touching in at 1:41.31.
Sophomore Greg Doughty claimed the 50 free title by clocking in at 21.31, a season-best time. Freshman Walter Rumans also swam a career and season-best time of 21.84, which was good for a bronze finish. Fadnes won the 100 free with a season-best time of 46.01.
SMU also swept the 200 IM event with junior Edward Downes touching in first with a time of 1:53.03. Junior J.J. Wojcik and senior Daniel Veale swam season-best times in their second and third place finishes, respectively. Downes also took first in the 200 fly, swimming a season-best 1:50.85.
In the 200 back, Renholm captured first place, while freshman James Shake placed third with a season-best time of 1:53.25. Veale swam to a first place finish in the 200 breast, touching in with a season-best time of 2:12.08.
In diving, sophomore Matthew Culbertson placed second in both the one-meter and three-meter events with scores of 304.88 and 357.38, respectively.
The Mustangs finished off the night with a win in the 400 free relay, coming in less than one second over their season-best time with a mark of 3:04.20.
SMU men's swimming and diving will return to Joe Perkins Natatorium on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in the annual SMU Invite featuring Arizona State, North Carolina, USC, Florida, and Michigan.
