HOUSTON, Texas (SMU)-SMU women's swimming and diving defeated the Rice Owls in head to head competition on Friday, January 16 at the Rice Pool in Houston, Texas by a score of 167-93. In the win, freshman Therese Svendsen set new career and season-best times in the 100 back, while SMU swept the event.
In the 50 free, senior Petra Klosova scored a win, taking first place with a time of 23.55. Sophomore Elzanne Werth followed in second. Senior Candace Blackman won the title in the 100 free with a time of 51.26, while sophomore Sascha Van den Branden finished in second.
Van den Branden overcame the competition in the 200 free, capturing first place with a time of 1:51.76. Senior Jennifer Basel swam a season-best time for a second place finish with a time of 1:55.48.
In the 500 free, freshman Christy-Leigh Lategan took first, touching in at 4:47.70, just under her season-best time. Sophomore Maroua Mathlouthi swam to a second place finish in the 1000 free, coming in at 10:11.58. Mathlouthi also placed first in the 200 IM.
The Mustangs swept the 100 back, with freshman Therese Svendsen clocking a first place finish with a time of 56.66, a career and season-best time. Sophomore Gabriela Soza finished in second with a season-best time, and freshman Jessica Shauwecker finished in third.
Svendsen turned around and swam a career and season-best time in the 200 back, touching the wall at 2:00.92. Klosova finished in second with a season-best time.
In the 100 breast, freshman Raminta Dvariskyte won the title in a season-best time of 1:04.88. Junior Devon Callaghan followed in second. Dvariskyte also placed first in the 200 breast, while Basel came in second with a season-best time.
Werth handled the competition in the 100 fly, finishing in first with a time of 55.29. Freshman Mustang Denisa Smolenova took second. In the 200 fly, Smolenova blasted by her competitors to claim first, while Lategan finished in third.
The night was topped off by the relays, with SMU pulling in behind the Rice Owls for second place. In the 200 medley relay, SMU placed first with a second-best season time of 1:44.57.
The Mustangs will return to action on Saturday against the Houston Cougars in Houston, Texas at 1:00 p.m.
