Cross Country Finishes Eighth At Notre Dame Invitational

Notre Dame Invitational Results Get Acrobat Reader

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (SMU) - The SMU Cross Country team finished eighth in its toughest test to-date of the 2009 season, Friday at the Notre Dame Invitational. The course was a 5k run around the Notre Dame Golf Course. Silje Fjortoft finished eighth out of 178 runners overall with a time of 16:58.

22 teams competed in all, including such nationally known powerhouses as 2008 NCAA Champions Washington, as well as Florida, Arizona State and Florida State. SMU finished with 218 points, ahead of host Notre Dame who finished with 288 points and fellow Conference-USA school, Rice which finished 16th with 452 points.

Including Fjortoft, SMU placed three runners in the top-50. Sophomore Kristine Eikrem-Engset finished 37th with a time of 17:25 and Sara Sjokvist finished 50th with a time of 17:34.

The Mustangs will take a week off before returning to competition, on Oct. 17 in Fayetteville, Ark., or in Terre Haute, Ind., as Pre-Nationals will take place the same weekend as the Chile Pepper Invitational.
