DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion in the championship game of the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament, falling 69-68 to Boston College Saturday night.
The Mustangs (5-1) cut the Eagles' (3-3) lead to one, 66-65 with 1:37 left, but never could get the lead. Ayla Brown hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to stretch the lead to four. Jillian Samuels hit a 3-point shot with two seconds left for the last bucket of the game to make the score 69-68.
Brittany Gilliam led the Mustangs with 22 points and seven rebounds, and Christine Elliott added 17 points. Jillian Samuels scored 11 and Alice Severin scored 10 to give the Mustangs four players in double-figures for the sixth consecutive game, but the inside play of Boston College post player Carolyn Swords that made the difference in the game.
Swords scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, despite playing the last several minutes of the second half with four fouls. Mickel Picco was 6-of-11 from 3-point range, finishing with 25 points.
The Mustangs travel to Denton, Texas Wednesday to take on North Texas in their next game.
