DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 defeat of the FIU Golden Panthers at Westcott Field on Friday night. Senior defender Lauren Shepherd netted the game winner in the 77th minute for the Mustangs. Shepherd fired a shot from the right outside corner of the field that beat the FIU goalie on the far side.

"We felt like going in to the game we needed to keep a good shape defensively, so we kept the field that they could play in very small and very tight," said head coach Brent Erwin. "In the first half, we just didn't do that. We calmed ourselves down at halftime. In the second half, we kept a better shape which allowed us to control the ball more which put us in a good position to attack, and we got the goal."

Goalkeeper Courtney Webb secured the win for the Mustangs, making a diving save in the 83rd minute to keep the score 1-0. Webb collected the shutout, making six stops on the night.

SMU will take their first road trip of the season next weekend as they take on No. 5 Portland Aug. 27. The Mustangs continue their road trip Aug. 29 as the Ponies take on the Oregon Ducks for the first time in school history.
