SHREVEPORT, La. (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team closed out the David Toms Intercollegiate carding a 289 to move into third place. The result was the Mustangs third top four finish of the season in four tournaments.
"We are getting better each event," said SMU head coach Josh Gregory. "Today was a big step for our team in that we played a solid final round, especially in windy conditions."
With the third-place finish, SMU topped all three ranked opponents in the 11-team field. No. 33 LSU finished fourth, while No. 32 Tulsa and No. 49 Louisiana-Lafayette tied for fifth.
Max Buckley earned his highest finish of the season after carding 72-72-71—215, 1-under for the tournament. The fifth place result was senior's fourth top-20 finish of the fall.
Matt Schovee and Sam Fidone both carded 220's, finishing tied for 17th. It was both players' first top-10 finish of the season. Fidone flew up the leaderboard today after firing a 3-under, 69.
Senior Marc Sambol finished tied for 28th after carding a 73-74-76—223, while Harry Higgs carded a 73-75-81—229 to finish tied for 44th.
"Max has been rock solid all year with four straight top 20's," Gregory added. "This week we finally got some solid play from fourth and fifth spots. Matt had his first top 20 of the year, closing with a 70-73, and Sam really stepped up with a 69 today, which was huge for a freshman in a final round. That gives us great momentum heading into our final event of the fall at Royal Oaks. Hopefully, we will put ourselves in contention again."
The Mustangs are off next week before competing in the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, Texas on Oct. 31-Nov. 1, the team's final tournament of the fall season.
