Mustangs Come Up Two Shots Short Of NCAA Finals

Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team came up two shots short of advancing to the NCAA Finals, carding final-round 292 to finish at 875 and in sixth place at the NCAA San Diego Men's Golf Regional at the 6,903-yard, par-72 The Farms Golf Club. Texas passed SMU over the final 18 holes and emerged with the fifth spot, bettering SMU 873 to 875. Only the top five teams at each Regional advance to Nationals.

Matt Schovee and Harry Higgs shot even-par 72s on day three and Kelly Kraft shot 73. Marc Sambol's 75 also counted for SMU as the Mustangs wrapped up their 2010-11 season.

In the end, it was the top five seeds that earned trips to Nationals which will take place in Stillwater, Okla., May 31 thru June 5 at Karsten Creek Golf Club. UCLA finished on top with a 10-under par 854 total, besting runner-up USC by three strokes (857). Tournament host San Diego shot the day's best team score (280) and finished in third alone with an even-par 864 total. Rounding out the top five was Ohio State (865) and Texas (873). Earning the lone individual bid to Nationals was senior Jason Millard of Middle Tennessee State who totaled a 5-under par total of 211 (72-69-70).
