SMU-SFA Box Score
DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team (1-1-0) got its first win of the season in dramatic fashion tonight with a goal in 88th minute by Amelia Ambrose to knock off Stephen F. Austin 2-1 at Westcott Field.
With overtime looming, the sophomore fought off a Ladyjack defender on the left side of the penalty box before cutting toward the goal and ripping the ball to the top right corner of the goal.
"The goal was just one player outworking and refusing to lose," said Head Coach Brent Erwin of the play. "I know it's a cliché, but she just got in and scored a nice goal, and Amelia does that for us. Sometimes you have to go into a game to make a difference and that's what she does."
SMU started the scoring off on the night with a strike inside the left post by junior Mallory Baum in the 29th minute with assists credited to Ryanne Lewis and Rikki Clarke.
For both sides, it was a tightly contested game, both having several scoring chances, but neither finding the back of the net.
After a key save in the second half by Courtney Webb on a free Ladyjack attacker in the penalty box, Stephen F. Austin scored the game-tying goal shortly after. In the 80th minute, Kylie Lowe got free on the SMU end line and laid off a pass to Breanne Vernon who found the left side of the net.
For the game, the two teams were even with six shots on goal, but the Ladyjacks held the total shot advantage at 13-10.
"We didn't play very well at all," Erwin said. "The positives are is that the sign of a good team a lot of times is being able to win when you didn't play well. We just talked as a team and we were all disappointed with how we played, it wasn't to the standard that we hold ourselves to, but saying that, we got a win."
SMU will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 26 as the team hosts UT-San Antonio. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Westcott Field. The SMU women's alumni game will follow at 8:30 p.m.
