SMU-UTSA Box Score
DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team notched its second win of the season with a 2-0 victory against Texas-San Antonio tonight at Westcott Field.
"Glad to win, glad to get a shutout," said SMU head coach Brent Erwin. "We took 16 shots and gave up four. They had one shot on goal so the defending was better. We didn't allow many opportunities. I thought for a large part of the first half we played great. We created a ton of chances, really were unlucky to not get more."
Controlling the game from the start, SMU kicked off the scoring with only two minutes left in the half when Shelby Hartweck found Briana Gaines at the top of the box. Gaines fired a low shot to the left side which UTSA keeper Dacia Webb couldn't corral. Kenzie Scovill pounced on the rebound to put the Mustangs on the board.
Coming out of the half, it didn't take long for the Mustangs to double their lead. Amanda Burgardt beat her defender on the left side of the box and crossed the ball in, finding Mallory Baum sitting 12 yards out. The junior rocketed the ball underneath the crossbar for her second goal of the season.
"We came out in the second half and started well," Erwin said."Mallory scored a great goal, good buildup. After that I think the game kind of fizzled out for a little bit, then we were able to put some subs in and we finished the game pretty strong, had a couple just across the face of the goal at the very end."
SMU closed out the game with a 12-shot advantage, outshooting the Roadrunners (0-3-0) 16-4.
SMU (2-1-0) will travel tomorrow ahead of its clash with Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at John Crain Field at the OU Soccer Complex in Norman, Okla.
