SMU-LMU Box Score
LOS ANGELES (SMU) - For the second-consecutive game, an early goal was the difference as the SMU women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Loyola Marymount this afternoon at Sullivan Field. SMU drops to 3-4 on the season, while LMU moves to 6-1-1.
In the second match of SMU's trip to Los Angeles, Calif., the 10th minute proved to once again be unlucky for the Mustangs. Two days ago, it was Sydney Leroux scoring UCLA's game-winner, this afternoon it was LMU's Brittney Sanford.
In today's 10th minute, an SMU defender was called for a push in the box against LMU's Tawni Martino, drawing a penalty kick. Sanford stepped up to take the kick, and after an initial save by SMU senior goalkeeper Courtney Webb, the Lion midfielder followed up the rebound for the game's only goal.
LMU came out of the gates recording five of their nine shots in the first 11 minutes. Despite the initial flurry, the Mustangs regrouped and went on the attack, outshooting the Lions 8-6 in the first half.
Throughout the second 45 minutes, SMU remained the aggressor, putting the Lion defense under heavy pressure. Despite living on the edge, LMU was able to keep SMU from scoring the equalizer.
The Mustangs outshot the Lions 14-9, notching one more shot on goal than the home side. SMU also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
SMU looks to rebound next weekend as they return home to host Prairie View A&M on Sept. 18. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Westcott Field.
