DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team defeated Prairie View A&M 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field. The Mustangs move to 4-4-0 heading into conference season next weekend, while the Panthers drop to 0-9-0 on the season.
Freshman Rikki Clarke started the scoring off for the Mustangs in the eight minute. After a shot by Kenzie Scovill deflected off a defender, Clarke pounced on the rebound and buried it in the back of the net to give SMU the early advantage.
SMU added to its lead in the second half as Olivia Elliott scored the first two goals of her SMU career within a six minute span. The forward scored her first goal in the 63rd minute after Kaitlyn Eidson slotted a through ball to the right side of the goal to Katherine Cox who found an open Elliot on the back post.
Less than six minutes later, Elliott got free at the top of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot under the crossbar to extend the lead to 3-0.
SMU scored its final goal of the match in the 82nd minute as Briana Gaines fired a shot that the Panthers goalkeeper couldn't corral. Scovill calmly slotted the rebound into the net for her second goal of the season.
From start to finish, the Mustangs controlled both possession and the game, outshooting the Panthers 35-1, with a 15-0 advantage in both shots on goal and in corner kicks.
SMU will look to take this momentum into Friday's Conference USA opener as the squad hosts defending regular-season champion UCF. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Westcott Field.
