HOUSTON (SMU) - Holly Hargreaves scored a goal for Rice in the 86th minute as the Owls defeated SMU 3-2 at Rice Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
SMU drops to 4-5-1 (0-1-1 C-USA) on the season. Rice improves to 5-4-2 (2-0-0).
Shelby Redman helped the Mustangs avoid another slow start by putting SMU on the board first at the 13 minute mark. The sophomore received a throw-in from Courtney Smith, and dribbled the ball to about 18 yards out and fired it past the keeper inside the near post.
Rice quickly tied the contest and then took the lead by the 21st minute, on two goals from Lauren Hughes.
Kenzie Scovill answered for the Mustangs in the 29th minute, with an 18-yard shot from the middle of the field that was out of the reach of Rice goalkeeper Amy Czyz. Freshman Lissi Lonsberry was double-teamed in the box, but with her back facing the goal, was able to find Scovill who found just enough daylight through the defense tuck the ball inside the left corner of the goal.
SMU Head Coach Chris Petrucelli knows that as conference play rolls on, his team needs to earn better results. Late-game situations have also been tough on the Mustangs, now losing three games this season with goals coming against them in the final four minutes of regulation or overtime.
"We've got to defend better," Petrucelli said. "If they score three, we need to have four."
SMU changed goalies at halftime, putting in freshman Shannon Moroney in relief of Lauryn Bodden. The duo combined for seven saves in the game.
