DALLAS (SMU) - Three Mustangs reached double figures in points as the SMU women's basketball team recorded a 69-53 wire-to-wire victory over Eastern Washington on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
"We tried to take them out of the game early," said head coach Rhonda Rompola. "That allowed us on the other end, when we got defensive rebounds, to get our transition game going."
Junior forward Destynee Hives-McCray paced the Mustangs, as she recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Raven Short and sophomore guard Morgan Bolton both posted season-high scoring totals. Bolton was second on the team with 12 points and Short chipped in with 10.
SMU (2-2) used an 18-5 rally in the first eight minutes of play to jump out to an early lead. During that stretch, Hives-McCray scored 11 of her 13 points.
The Mustangs would not let up and carried a 42-20 into the half.
Eastern Washington (1-2) shot just 35.2% from the field, including a 17.6% clip from beyond the arc. Guard Hayley Hodgins was the only Eagle in double figures with 10 points.
"We did some different things defensively to disrupt their shooters," said Rompola. "We threw some things at them that I thought they struggled with. I thought it took them an entire half to really adjust to it."
Sophomore guard Kiara Perry added eight points, four assists and four steals, while junior guard chipped in with nine points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Mustangs now have a brief hiatus before hosting the SMU Thanksgiving Invitational on Nov. 28-29.
"It's nice to have a couple days where we can just work on us rather than preparing for another team," said Rompola. "We need to have a good showing and be very competitive."
