AMES, Iowa (SMU) - Freshman Agnes Sjöström paced the Mustang distance runners as she placed ninth in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:33.86 as the SMU indoor track and field team competed on the second and final day of the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. Sjöström now holds the top times in the American Athletic Conference in both the 3000-meter and 5000-meter events following this weekend's meet.
"Agnes recorded these great times now and it's great to know we have her in our program for three more years," Director of Track & Field Dave Wollman said. "Her breakthrough performances this weekend will lead to the rest of our very talented distance runners to follow."
In addition to Sjöström, sophomores Melanie Stemper and Shanoah Souza finished third (9:52.41) and sixth (9:57.07) in the unseeded 3000-meter run. Sophomore Karoline Skatteboe placed 21st (10:01.22) and 22nd (4:57.04) in the same race and one mile run, respectively.
In the shot put, junior Helena Perez placed third in the shot put with a mark of 15.14 meters while junior Rayann Chin and freshman Tochi Nlemchi followed Perez as they placed fourth (14.92m) and ninth (14.20m), respectively.
In the sprinting events for the Mustangs, sophomore Rachel Scruggs placed 10th in the 400-meter dash as she crossed the finish line in time of 56.56. SMU placed 10th in the 4x400-meter relay as the group of juniors Craishia Washington and Stephanie Kalu, sophomore Hannah Moss and Scruggs crossed the finish line in a time of 3:47.47.
After sitting idle next weekend, SMU returns to action on Feb. 28 - Mar. 1 as the team travels to New York City, N.Y. for the inaugural American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
"Everything is shaping up for us to give our best effort in two weeks at the conference meet," Wollman continued. "That's all we can ask."
