Mustangs In Eighth After Round One At Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs ended round one at the Puerto Rico Classic in eighth place at two-over par, with three Mustangs posting even-par scores. No. 1 Alabama leads the field by five strokes.
Senior Harry Higgs, sophomore Bryson Dechambeau and freshman Andrew Buchanan all posted even-par rounds of 72. Buchanan had the most eventful day of the trio, posting four birdies, four bogeys, an eagle and a double-bogey. Dechambeau each had a pair of birdies and bogeys, while Ryan Burgess began the round at three under through four holes but fell back after tripling the 13th hole and wound up at two-over for the day.
SMU head coach Josh Gregory liked how his squad began the day, but knows his team gave up some strokes on the back nine.
"We got off to a great start, then we played the easy stretch of the course (holes 11-15) at four-over par," Gregory said. "That was our only poor stretch of golf. I'm looking forward to moving up the leaderboard tomorrow."
No. 1 Alabama leads the field by five strokes, with No. 2 Georgia Tech and No. 5 Georgia tied for second. Purdue and Michigan rounded out the top five, with the Wolverines five strokes ahead of the Mustangs. Purdue's Adam Schenk leads all individuals at six-under par, with Georgia's Joey Garber and Robby Shelton and Cory Whitsett representing Alabama all tied for second.
