Mustangs Tie For Ninth At Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs carded a six-under par final round to tie for ninth at the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, on Tuesday. Senior Harry Higgs shot a two-under 70 for the second straight day to tie for 16th at four-under overall, while sophomore Bryson Dechambeau shot three-under for the day.
Four of SMU's five golfers finished the final round at par or better, with Ryan Burgess shooting a one-under 71 and Andrew Buchanan scoring an even-par 72. While Higgs matched his second round score, the other four Mustangs each improved upon their Monday score by at least two strokes.
"We played much better today," SMU head coach Josh Gregory said. "We still had a poor finish, which kept us from having a great round. Fortunately it gives us momentum heading into this week. We just simply have to get a lot better as a team."
Dechambeau birdied his first hole of the round, and would follow up with three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole. Higgs carded three straight birdies on holes 12-14 and Burgess was two-under through his first five holes to contribute to SMU's solid start.
No. 1 Alabama won the tournament by four strokes over No. 2 Georgia Tech, with No. 5 Georgia, Clemson and Virginia Tech rounded out the top five. Miller Capps of Clemson and Robby Shelton of Alabama tied for the individual title, with each player totaling a 12-under 204 for the event.
SMU will host the Querencia Cabo Intercollegiate, which begins on Sunday, March 2. The three-day event will conclude on March 4. More information on the tournament can be found at QuerenciaCaboCollegiate.com.
