AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) - Senior Helena Perez led the SMU throwers as she placed first in both the shot put (15.92m) and the hammer throw (60.34m) and ninth in the discus (40.95m) as the SMU track & field team competed at the Texas Invitational on Saturday in Austin, Texas. SMU recorded 12 top-10 finishes at the Invite. Perez' mark in the hammer throw was a personal-best throw.
"It's good to get another competition in as everyone seems to be getting better every week," Director of Track & Field Dave Wollman said. "We are clearly moving in the right direction as we get ready for the conference championship in a couple weeks."
In addition to Perez, junior Rayann Chin placed third in both the discus (50.07m) and the hammer throw (49.98m) and fourth in the shot put (14.38m), while freshman Tochi Nlemchi finished second in the shot put (14.80m) and sixth in the discus with a mark of 43.10 meters.
Sophomore Rachel Scruggs paced the SMU sprinters as she finished ninth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.11 seconds. In addition to Scruggs, junior Stephanie Kalu posted a time of 23.68 seconds which was good for ninth place in the 200-meter dash.
Senior multi-event athlete Lisa Egarter continued her impressive spring as she notched two top-10 finishes at the Texas Invite. Her best mark came in the javelin as she placed fourth with a throw of 36.39 meters.
SMU is back in action in two weeks as the Mustangs spilt there team once again to compete in the Mt. Sac Relays (April 17-19) in Walnut, Calif., the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas (April 19) and the Sooner Invitational (April 19) in Norman, Okla.
