DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team fell to the Missouri Tigers, 3-1, on Sunday night at Westcott Field. Freshman midfielder Claire Oates scored the Mustangs' lone goal. The score was the first of her career.
"We fought hard," said Head Coach Chris Petrucelli. "Our effort was really good."
The match was a battle from beginning to end, as there were 23 total fouls and three total yellow cards.
Missouri (2-1-1, 0-0-0 SEC) went ahead early thanks to a 9th-minute goal from forward Reagan Russell. Tiger midfielder Kaysie Clark made a run down the sideline and hit a low cross that found the foot of Russell, who put it just past the fingertips of SMU goalkeeper Lissi Lonsberry.
SMU (1-3-0, 0-0-0 AAC) answered in the 42nd minute when a corner kick from sophomore defender Taylor Barg found the head of Oates, who put the ball into the top of the net.
The Tigers controlled the play for most of the first half, totaling 10 shots to SMU's three. The teams each had two corner kicks in the opening half.
The Mustangs nearly went ahead early in the second half. In the 46th minute, sophomore forward Kelsey Gorney hit a shot that skidded off the crossbar.
The Tigers then went back ahead in the 51st minute when forward Savannah Trujillo hit a one-time strike into the back of the net. Clark recorded her second assist of the game on the goal.
SMU had a few chances late in the second half to even the game. In the 64th minute, Barg lofted a corner kick into the box. The ball bounced off of a few players before Gorney connected, but her shot was blocked by a Mizzou defender. In the 84th minute, freshman forward Chinelo Odobulu made a blazing run down the sideline and hit a low cross to fellow freshman Lauren Guerra. However, Guerra's attempt found the side of the net.
Missouri increased their lead to two with Trujillo's second goal of the match in the 87th minute.
Lonsberry made seven saves for the Mustangs, including two impressive stops on breakaways.
"If we play with this effort from here on out, we're going to win a lot of games," said Petrucelli.
SMU will remain in Dallas for a pair of home matches next weekend. On Friday, the Mustangs will play the first leg of a soccer doubleheader at Westcott Field. SMU will take on Oral Roberts at 5 p.m. CT, with the men's team following with a match against Duke at 7:30 p.m. CT. On Sunday, the Mustangs host UTSA at 7 p.m. CT.
