Mustangs Fall At TCU, 4-1

Box Score Sept. 19, 2014

BOX SCORE | SEASON STATS FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to TCU on Friday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.

Despite the goal margin, SMU and TCU battled back and forth for most of the contest, as both teams tallied ten shots.

"For large portions of the game, I thought we played pretty well," said Head Coach Chris Petrucelli. "We had a lot of services into the penalty area, but we were unable to get on the other end of those crosses."

TCU (6-3-0, 0-0-0 Big 12) went ahead early, after forward Emma Heckendorn capitalized on a breakaway in the fourth minute, to put the Horned Frogs up, 1-0.

SMU (3-5-0, 0-0-0 AAC) responded in the 12th minute to even the score at 1-1. Freshman defender Lauren Harrington lofted in a free kick from 30 yards out that bounced off the head of a TCU defender and into the back of the net.

In the 23rd minute, the Mustangs had an opportunity to pull ahead when sophomore Taylor Barg found Claire Oates on a corner kick, but Oates' header was blocked by the TCU defense.

Freshman Chinelo Odobulu came off the bench and provided the Mustangs with another scoring chance. Sophomore defender Taylor Jackson connected with Odobulu on a long cross, but Odobulu's shot missed wide left.

At halftime, the score was tied, 1-1. SMU outshot TCU 8-4 in the opening half and tallied two corner kicks, while TCU had zero.

Like the first half, the Horned Frogs scored early to build a one-goal lead. Kela Gray capitalized on a corner kick in the 47th minute to put TCU up 2-1.

SMU put pressure on the TCU defense for most of the second half, but could not combine around the box.

In the 64th minute, Oates got her head on a loose ball in the box, but her attempt missed wide. In the 78th minute, senior forward Shelby Redman gathered a rebound off of a Barg corner, but had her shot blocked by a TCU defender.

Lauren Sajewich and Eryn Spencer scored for the Horned Frogs late in the half to push the TCU lead to 4-1.

Junior Lissi Lonsberry recorded two saves in net for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs have a quick turnaround with a home match against Gonzaga on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.

"We need to get going in the right direction before conference play," said Petrucelli. "Sunday is an important game for us."
