DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team came from behind to defeat the Gonzaga Bulldogs, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday at Westcott Field. Freshman Lauren Guerra scored both goals for SMU.
The victory was SMU's first overtime win since Sept. 17, 2010, when the Mustangs topped North Texas, 3-2, in overtime.
After Friday's loss to TCU and this match being the last game before conference play, the win was huge for the Mustangs.
"We needed to bounce back," said Head Coach Chris Petrucelli. "I think this will help us moving forward."
In the first half, the Mustangs controlled most of the play, outshooting the Bulldogs, 7-2. SMU had opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but narrowly missed on several chances.
In the 6th minute, freshman Claire Oates got her head on a cross from fellow freshman Chinelo Odobulu, but her attempt was saved by Gonzaga goalkeeper Christie Tombari.
In the 24th minute, sophomore Kelsey Gorney sent a header towards the left side of the goal, but Tombari made a diving save to prevent a Mustang goal.
The best chance for SMU in the opening half came in the 29th minute, when Odobulu gathered the ball after a Gonzaga defensive blunder and headed towards net. However, Tombari raced out to make a sliding save on Odobulu's shot.
Early in the second half, Gonzaga's Mikayla Johnson broke the scoreless tie with a strike from 20 yards out that soared just past the fingertips of SMU goalkeeper Lissi Lonsberry.
"I thought we played quite well in the first half and it was deflating to go down a goal," said Petrucelli. "But we fought back really well."
The Mustangs nearly evened the score just minutes later when senior Rikki Clarke fired a low shot that just missed the lower left corner in the 60th minute.
Guerra then found the back of the net in the 72nd minute to even the score at 1-1. Senior forward Shelby Redman hit a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. Guerra gathered the rebound and flicked a shot off the right post and into the back of the net. The goal was Guerra's second of the season.
SMU had a few opportunities to pull ahead in the closing minutes, but could not capitalize. In the 85th minute, Oates headed a shot on a Barg corner, but her attempt was blocked by a Gonzaga defender. Just one minute later, Odobulu then streaked across the box to flick a header towards the lower left corner of the net, but Tombari made another diving save to keep the game deadlocked.
With the score tied at 1-1, the game headed to overtime. Seven minutes into the first overtime period, Clarke slipped a through ball to Guerra, who sent a shot into the lower left corner of the goal for the game-winner.
"She's probably the best pure goal scorer that we have," said Petrucelli. "We just haven't been able to get her in positions where she can take advantage of that. When she went in on the goalkeeper (in overtime), I was certain she was going to score."
On Thursday, the Mustangs kick off conference play with a road match at Houston at 7 p.m. CT.
