DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Friday night at Westcott Field.

SMU (1-4-0, 0-0-0 AAC) started strong, tallying two quick shots in the opening minute.  Rikki Clarke hit a strike from just outside the box, but her shot was saved by Oral Roberts goalkeeper, Maddie Rhodes.  Moments later, freshman midfielder Claire Oates sent a shot just wide of the net.

"We had some chances early that could've changed the game," said Head Coach Chris Petrucelli. "But, we responded well in the second half and fought really hard."

Oral Roberts (1-2-2, 0-0-0 Summit) then went ahead in the 26th minute after Madison Valenzuela put a cross from Megan Giles into the back of the net.

The best chance for the Mustangs in the opening half came in the 29th minute, when a corner kick from Taylor Barg found the head of Oates, but her attempt was unable to find the target.

The Roadrunners held the advantage in shots in the first half, 6-4, with the Mustangs earning two corner kicks to ORU's one.

In the second half, the Mustangs evened the score at 1-1 in the 60th minute.  Freshman forward Chinelo Odobulu earned a penalty kick for SMU and senior Shelby Redman beat Oral Roberts keeper Helen Erb with a well-placed shot in the lower right corner.  The goal was Redman's 20th of her career.

Late in the second half, SMU had several chances to take the lead.

In the 79th minute, freshman Vanessa Valadez ripped a shot from just inside the 18, but Erb got a fingertip on the strike and the ball ricocheted off of the crossbar.

In the 81st minute, Valadez beat a defender and tried to slip a shot past the Golden Eagle goalie, but her shot was deflected.  Fellow freshman Chinelo Odobulu gathered the rebound and sent a shot just wide of the net.

In the 86th minute, freshman Lauren Guerra's free kick hit the post, giving the Mustangs yet another unfortunate bounce.

Moments later, Oral Roberts countered and Kaily Cox placed her shot just out of the reach of Lonsberry to give the Golden Eagles the lead in the 87th minute.  Oral Roberts would then hold off a slew of SMU corner kicks in the final minutes to earn the victory, 2-1.

Junior goalkeeper Lissi Lonsberry, making her third career start in net, recorded three saves for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs will return to Westcott Field on Sunday night for a 7 p.m. CT contest against the UTSA Roadrunners.  For ticket information, please visit SMUtickets.com.
