DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team opened the 2015 spring season with a 7-0 win over Sam Houston State on Friday afternoon at the Brad and Ann Brookshire Family Indoor Pavilion at the SMU Tennis Complex.

SMU improved to 1-0 on the season, while Sam Houston State dropped to 0-2.

"We were very excited to start the season," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We were very excited to start the season. We had great energy and poise. Our performance reflected that against a good team."

Hristina Dishkova and Holly Verner earned a 6-3 win over Sam Houston's Olivia Battye and Mila Milanovic and Maddie Mortimore in the No. 2 doubles match. Yana Erkeeva and Mary Wright then clinched the point for SMU in No. 3 doubles, topping Olivia Gettwart and Bailey VanDyke, 6-3.

Dasha Sharapova recorded the first singles point for SMU, defeating VanDyke, 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 singles. Anna Kate Anderson extended the SMU lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Gettwart in No. 2 singles.

Vaszilisza Bulgakova clinched the match for the Mustangs, topping Milanovic in No. 4 singles; 6-3, 6-3.

In No. 5 singles, Dishkova defeated Battye in straight sets; 7-5, 6-1. Her doubles teammate, Verner, then recorded a victory over Mortimore in No. 6 singles; 6-3, 6-3.

The match ended with a thrilling three-set match between Wright and Martinez. Wright won the first set, 7-5, but Martinez battled back to win the second, 6-4. In the deciding ten-point tiebreaker, Wright hung on to win, 10-5.

"I thought we did a very good job today of concentrating on the next ball and not dwelling on what we did the previous point," said. Gyulai. "For tomorrow, we look to have the same type of effort and attitude."

SMU returns to action tomorrow to face McNeese State at 11 a.m. CT at the SMU Tennis Complex. Admission is free.
