DALLAS (SMU) - Sophomore Mauro Cichero tallied his eighth goal of the season in the 52nd minute to lead the SMU men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Connecticut on Saturday night at Westcott Field. The win improved SMU's record to 9-2-2 overall and 4-0 in league action, while the Huskies fell to 3-4-4 and 0-3-1 in conference play.
Cichero's goal came after he received a cross from teammate Jared Rice off a free kick and headed it in to the left corner of the goal. The assist was Rice's seventh of the season, a team high.
"It was a good win against a big, athletic team," Head Coach Kevin Hudson said. "Connecticut is always a tough team to play. They caused problems for us but it was a relatively even match. We created enough chances and we had long spells of possession and eventually we found the right movements to break them down."
Connecticut had a chance to score the equalizer in the 62nd minute off a penalty kick but Huskies player Alex Sanchez missed over the goal.
The Mustangs outshot Connecticut 17-11 overall, Cichero and Brenden Lee led the team with four shots apiece. Freshman Caleb Smith added two shots while Rice, Jordan Cano, Bryce Clark, Taylor Curtis, Idi Camara and Emil Cuello tallied one shot each to round out the total.
In the net, goalkeeper Michael Nelson recorded five saves and tallied his fifth shutout of the season. Connecticut goalkeeper Scott Levene recorded three saves of the four shots on goal he faced.
The Mustangs take on Cincinnati on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. CT/ 8 p.m. ET at Gettler Stadium.
