DALLAS (SMU/AAC) – American Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Media Day is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 26 at the Grand Bohemian Hotel in Orlando, Fla., from 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT until 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT. Rhonda Rompola, who is entering her 25th season as head coach at SMU, as well as sophomore forward Alicia Froling and sophomore guard McKenzie Adams, will represent SMU.
American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco will have opening remarks at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT. Froling will take part in the second half of a roundtable discussion with other student-athletes from the league, followed by Rompola and the second half and a portion of the league's head coaches. SMU's representatives will be on the dais with participants from USF, Temple, Tulane and Tulsa.
Froling was named to the conference All-Freshman team after setting a school record with 54 blocks last season and becoming the first freshman to lead SMU in scoring since Janielle Dodds in 2004-05, averaging 11.5 points per game. Dodds averaged 14.1 per game, and is the SMU all-time leading scorer with 1,861 points.
Adams transferred from Arkansas a year ago, and is eligible to play on opening day. She started for Arkansas as a freshamn, averaging 8.6 points per game, fourth on the team. Adams shot 35.5 percent from 3-point range, 43-of-121, and 35.8 percent overall, 88-of-246.
The Mustangs return eight letterwinners, including four starters, from last season's young squad, which featured five freshmen who played significant minutes. SMU adds five newcomers to the active roster with Adams and a pair of community college graduates, including two-time NJCAA All-American Ashley Gibson, who averaged 19.6 points per game at Butler Community College.
SMU begins the season Nov. 15 against Northwestern State in Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs play six of 11 non-conference games at home before starting the American Athletic Conference schedule Jan. 2 at Tulsa.
