Mustangs Ranked No. 21 In Season-Opening CSCAA Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CSCAA/SMU) - The SMU women's swimming and diving team sits at No. 21 in the first edition of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) 2015-16 Division I poll, the organization announced on Tuesday. This is a biweekly poll, which alternates with the men's Division I poll.
The Mustangs are coming off a fifth-place finish at the 22nd annual SMU Classic in which six Mustangs posted NCAA 'B' cuts, and Maddie Hoch posted a pair of national top-10 times in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles, at sixth and fourth, respectively. For her efforts, Hoch earned back-to-back American Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week honors. Marne Erasmus, who is a two-time All-American in the 100-yard butterfly, currently holds the nation's second fastest time at 52.60.
Three more Ponies staked their claim in the country's top 25 at the event with Vicky Cunningham posting the 12th fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle, All-American Tara-Lynn Nicholas at 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke and Kirsty McLauchlan 25th in the 200-yard breaststroke.
The Mustangs also won eight of ten relays, and both diving disciplines, in their season opener at the North Texas Relays.
SMU ranked as high as No. 11 in the 2014-15 polls, and finished the season as the No. 31 team in the country following the NCAA Championship. The team looks to become the first school to post back-to-back AAC Championships on either the men's or women's side.
The Mustangs head to Houston this weekend to take on the Cougars, out of The American, on Friday and Rice on Saturday. Friday evening's event begins at 6 p.m. CT, while Saturday kicks off at 12 p.m. Check SMUMustangs.com for ways to follow.
