The Week Ahead…
Coming off a 2-0 week on the Hilltop, the SMU men's soccer team hits the road to take on Memphis on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. CT and returns home to host Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
On The National Stage…
The Mustangs are receiving votes in the NSCAA Division I Coaches Poll for the second time this season after posting a 2-1 win over Oral Roberts and a 2-1 victory over UCF last week. With the win against UCF, SMU is now 6-1-1 at home this season, 7-2-2 overall and 2-0 in American play.
SMU is also tied for first with USF in the league standings and lead the conference in points (62), shots (166), goals (20), assists (22), corner kicks (61) and assists per game (22).
Scouting The Tigers…
Memphis enters Wednesday's match with a 2-5-2 overall record, including a 1-0 win over Connecticut in its last time out. Raul Gonzalez leads the Tigers with eight points (four goals) and shots with 32 in 2015. Goalkeepers Cody Uzcatequi and Jake Leeker have split time in goal for the Tigers and post a combined .73 goals-against-average with 38 saves.
Series History…
The Mustangs are 9-3 all-time against Memphis with the last match being in 2014 when SMU defeated the Tigers, 2-0, on the Hilltop.
Scouting The Huskies…
Connecticut enters Saturday's match with a 3-3-3 overall record and a 0-2 record in conference play. In their last time out, the Huskies fell to Memphis, 1-0, in double overtime. Abdou Thiam leads the Huskies with four points (two goals) while Kwame Awuah leads the team in shots with 23.
Series History…
The Mustangs are 1-6 all-time against Connecticut with the last match being in 2014 when SMU fell to the Huskies, 1-0.
Looking Back…
In a 2-1 win over Oral Roberts, redshirt junior Brenden Lee scored his third goal of the season early in the match to put the Mustangs up 1-0 over the Golden Eagles. Lee received a long ball pass from Jordan Cano, took one touch and drilled the ball into the lower right hand corner of the goal from 18 yards out.
Cuello, a freshman from Orem, Utah, scored what proved to be the match winner in the 38th minute after he collected a pass from Jacob Speed and fired the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal for his third of the season.
In a 2-1 victory over UCF, sophomore Mauro Cichero scored a pair of first half goals to keep the Mustangs' five game win streak alive. Cichero's first goal came after he got his head on a Bryce Clark cross and placed the ball in the top center of the goal. Three minutes later, Cichero fired a shot from 30 yards out and found the back of the net to tally his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
American Honors…
Cuello and Cichero earned conference Rookie of the Week and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively, for their performance in the 2-0 week.
Cichero's and Cuello's awards were the Mustangs' fourth and fifth conference player of the week awards in 2015 with Jared Rice earning Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28., Cuello earning Rookie of the Week on Sept. 21 and Cichero earning Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 7.
Change In Leadership…
Former SMU standout Kevin Hudson enters his first season as the Ponies' head coach after being named the fourth head coach in the program's history on Jan. 9, 2015. Hudson spent seven seasons as an assistant coach and was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2014 season after returning to the Hilltop in 2007.
