ERIN, Wis. (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team claimed the team title and senior Austin Smotherman finished tied for second as the Mustangs wrapped up the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, Tuesday, at the Erin Hills Golf Course.

"I am so proud of the guys and Coach [Chris] Parra," said Head Coach Jason Enloe. "We all gave each other 100 percent this week and it was good enough for the victory. Needless to say it was a rough week for SMU golf, so to bring the spirits up with a win is tremendous and really shows the character of our team."

As a team, the Mustangs were 13-under-par with a three-round score of 851. SMU finished two strokes ahead of second-place Oklahoma State (-11, 853). UCLA rounded out the top three, with a score of 857, four strokes behind OSU in the 11-team field.

In his best performance of the season, Smotherman finished tied for second with an 8-under 208. Smotherman carded seven birdies on the day and finished five-under in the third round. The second place finish matches Smotherman's career-best which came at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate during his sophomore year.

Juniors Alex Higgs and Andrew Buchanan finished in a six-way tie for eighth with a total score of 215 (-1). Higgs, who has now finished top-10 in three consecutive tournaments, finished the day 1-under (71), while Buchanan shot a 2-under to wrap up the competition.

After shooting a 4-under second round, Gray Townsend finished the third round 3-over (75), tying him for 14th with two other golfers shooting a three-round par 216. Ryan Burgess finished the round tied for 58th (+17, 233).

"It was so much fun being with the boys this week and we are all proud of our accomplishment this week," said Enloe.

Next up, the Mustangs will return to Dallas and compete at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate hosted by Baylor, Oct. 26 and 27 at the Royal Oaks Country Club. More information on the tournament can be found at smumustangs.com
