Mustangs Close Out Fall Season At Home

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team wrapped up their fall tournament season at home for the Red and Blue Challenge. The three-day event saw teams from Sam Houston State, Texas A&M, Tulsa, Wichita State and Wyoming visit the SMU Tennis Complex over the weekend.
The weekend for SMU was highlighted by the singles play of Mary Wright as the junior went 2-1. After dropping a match to Tulsa's Marcelina Cichon, Wright went on to win her next two matches, first against Wyoming's Elisa Koonik (6-4, 6-1) on Saturday then against Wichita State's Tanaporn Thongsing (6-3, 6-4) on Sunday.
The rest of the Mustang's lineup went on to win three singles matches and two doubles matches during the weekend of play. Singles wins came from Macie Elliott on Friday against Tulsa's Renata Kuricova (3-6, 6-4, 7-5), Yana Erkeeva defeated Nastya Tokareva from Wyoming (7-5, 6-3) and Ana Perez-Lopez won against Wyoming's Miranda Talbert (6-2, 6-3) on Saturday.
Perez-Lopez was paired with Dasha Sharapova in doubles as they beat Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg from Wyoming (6-1) on Saturday. Erkeeva was paired with Vaszilisza Bulgakova, who beat Guilia Guidetti and Thongsing from Wichita State on Sunday (6-3).
SMU will now start to train for duals' season in the spring that will get set off Jan. 29 with six straight homes matches. Before they close the book on this month completely, women's tennis will be hosting a Kids' Clinic Nov. 13 then an Alumni tournament on the 20th and 21st of the month.
