Acker Named CoSIDA Academic All-American Of The Year

AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) – SMU senior setter Avery Acker was named the Academic All-American of the Year, College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. She earned the academic equivalent of a National Player of the Year award with a 3.95 GPA in accounting with minors in chemistry and biology, and has been accepted into medical school.
A Poth, Texas, native, Acker led the Mustangs to a program-record 27 wins and the school's first conference championship, going 17-3 in the American Athletic Conference and 27-6 overall to advance to the NCAA Championship. Acker led the NCAA with 12.45 assists per set, while setting an SMU and AAC single-season record with 1,482 assists.
Acker set the conference single-match record with 67 assists to lead SMU to a five-set win against TCU. She reached 60 assists in a match four times, guiding the Mustangs to a school-record .245 attack percentage. The three-year starter was named The American Player of the Year by the league's coaches, and earned her second conference Setter of the Year award. She was also named to the AVCA All-Southeast Region team, and is a two-time All-America Honorable Mention award winner.
During her career, Acker climbed to second at SMU with 4,321. She guided SMU to three 20-win seasons as a starter, and SMU posted a 53-12 record over the past two seasons. SMU won a program-record 16 straight matches in 2015 and then-record 11 straight matches in 2014.
