Moody Completes US National Team ID Training

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (SMU) - Sophomore Savannah Moody recently completed her training at the US National Team ID Camp in Chula Vista, California. Moody was one of about 15 other athletes to take part in the training camp, which identifies possible rowers to compete on the U-23 National Team.

Describe the format of the weekend and what kind of events you took part in...
On Saturday, I did workouts on my own (ran 7mi and erg). On Sunday, my family and I drove to the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center. The National Team coach, Laurel Korholz, weighed and measured everyone and then we got on the ergs and did power testing (10 stroke watt power test). Then a 6k test after that. To finish, the Olympic quad that raced and medaled in Beijing talked to us and gave us a tour of the training center.
What did the experience mean to you...
It was such a humbling, impactful experience to be practicing in a room full of incredibly fast girls. It was awesome to see the level that I could work towards competing at in the future. Listening to the advice from the national coach, and from the rowers in the Olympic quad, was definitely something that I will remember.
How will it help with your rowing at SMU...
This experience gave me confidence coming back for spring season. Overcoming this weekend will make other challenging things that I come across seem less challenging, since it was a little nerve wracking going into an environment with such a high level of competition. I also hope that with this experience I can help lead my team to a successful season.
What is the next step in your training...
The next step is to keep working out on my own as well as with my team. I should also get some feedback from the national coach soon, so I can adjust my workouts according to what she has to say.
Moody, a second-team all-region selection a season ago, will open her season with the Mustangs on March 14 at White Rock Lake against Creighton. The event is one of four that SMU will host this spring with dates against Kansas (April 4), Tulsa (April 18) and Alabama (April 25) also scheduled.
