CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (SMU) – Kicking off their 2026 fall campaign, SMU Rowing delivered a strong showing at The Head of the Charles, securing a third-place medal in the women's club fours and 14th overall in the club eights.
"The team has been putting in a lot of work this fall," said head coach Chase Graham. "You can't beat getting on this stage and seeing what you can do this time of year. This weekend was purely a checkpoint to see how things are going, and now it's back to work. We're focused on the races in May. It was really great to hear all the 'Go Mustangs' and 'Pony Ups' from random fans in the crowd."
The club fours, coxed by Sophie Swords, got off to a fast start and never looked back. The rest of the crew, including Izie Murray, Britt Potman, Freya Weiser and Jesse Pulford clocked a time of 19:18.001 to secure the bronze medal.
"I'm really proud of what we accomplished as a team this weekend," said Potman. "It was exciting to see all the hard work we've put in so far come together and be reflected in our performance. Seeing these results makes me even more excited about what this team is capable of and what we can accomplish as we continue through the season."
"Glad the Club 4+ athletes were able to take home some hardware and display their improvements," Graham said. "They had a great run down the course."
Two races later, the club eights got their turn. Facing a deep field, SMU delivered a 17:35.367 for 14th overall.
"Traveling up to Boston was such a great trip, and we were all so excited for this opportunity to race a lot of teams we won't see much of in the spring," said Ava Ha. "With such a strong headwind on Saturday, I'm proud of how we handled the conditions and still raced hard. We've put in really good work at home all fall and are continuing to get stronger. This trip was a good sign of the progress we'll continue to make as we head into our spring season."
"The Club 8+ started 32nd and closed out the race finishing in 14th place," Graham said. "These athletes really came together in the final rows before the race. It was nice to see them make the most of the opportunity. The team also got to face some adversity, and they responded as well as they could have. We will double down on what has been working for us and remain on that path."
