Day 1 Results 
GREENSBORO, N.C. (SMU) - Behind a first-place finish from senior Devin Burnett, the SMU men's swimming and diving team is in first place after the first night of competition of the American Athletic Conference Championship at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
After sweeping the diving events in 2014, Burnett returned to the top of the podium, winning the one-meter on Wednesday night.
Burnett finished first with an NCAA-qualifying score of 390.05. Hayden Hodges grabbed the bronze for SMU with a score of 321.25. In addition to the two medalists, David Bunn placed sixth (284.70) and Daniel Pitts finished eighth (264.10).
In the three-meter consolation finals, Parker Meinecke placed third out of eight divers with a score of 274.65.
SMU's 800-yard freestyle relay of Christian Scherubl, Eastman Holloway, Tucker Wells and Tyler Rauth opened the night with a second-place finish (6:33.11).
Scherubl swam the first leg for the Mustangs, touching the wall in a `B' cut time of 1:35.16. Scherubl's time was 0.20 off the school record, set by Lars Frolander in 1997.
In the final race of the evening, SMU also finished second in the 200-yard medley relay. Sam Straughan, Ziga Cerkovnik, Rauth and Bartosz Krzyzaniak made up the Mustangs' silver medal squad.
East Carolina won both the 800-yard free relay (6:30.55) and 200-yard medley relay (1:27.19).
Action continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT with prelims in the 500-yard free, 200-yard IM, 50-yard free and one-meter diving.
