GREENSBORO, N.C. (SMU) -- Sam Straughan won two individual gold medals and Christian Scherubl set a new school record, as the SMU men's swimming and diving team concluded the third day of the American Athletic Conference Championship on Friday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Despite four victories on the day, the Mustangs fell into second place, as they trail East Carolina by 33 points. Connecticut is in third place with Cincinnati following in fourth.
Straughan opened his night by winning the gold in the 100-yard butterfly (47.18). Senior Tyler Rauth earned the silver, posting a 'B' cut time (47.24), while Tucker Wells just missed the podium, placing fourth (48.45).
Straughan added his second gold of the night in the 100-yard backstroke, as he set a new meet record (46.60). Bartosz Krzyzaniak placed fourth (49.01) and Thomas Colket won the 100-yard back consolation final (51.80).
A day after swimming the fastest 500-yard freestyle time in SMU history, Scherubl set a new school record in the 200-yard free (1:34.89) and earned his second gold of the meet. Lars Frolander held the previous school record (1:34.96), set in 1997. Matthew Colket won the 200-yard free consolation final (1:39.75).
Straughan, Cerkovnik, Rauth and Scherubl ended the night with a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay (3:10.89). The Mustangs' time is 'B' cut time and was .01 off the school record.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Ziga Cerkovnik grabbed the silver, posting an NCAA 'B' cut time (54.15). Stefan Popov placed fourth (55.47) and Hayden Corley finished eighth (57.40).
Tomorrow will be the final day of competition at the conference championship, with action beginning at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT with preliminary heats.
