HONOLULU -- The SMU women's tennis team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 5-2, on Thursday at the University of Hawaii's UH Tennis Complex, as the Mustangs' concluded their Hawaiian road trip with a 2-0 record.

"We played well with the lead today," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We took early leads from the start and never looked back. This was a great road win for us."

SMU (9-3, 2-0 The American) won the doubles point for the second consecutive match with victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Dasha Sharapova (No. 1) topped Megan Sandford and Camille De Leon, 6-2, while Hristina Dishkova and Holly Verner (No. 2) earned their 20th win of the season, defeating Alexis Valenzuela and Danielle Pham, 6-3.

Cal State Fullerton (7-8, 0-4 Big West) earned points in No. 1 and No. 2 singles. De Leon (No. 1) topped Dishkova, winning the deciding 10-point tiebreaker, 10-6. Sandford (No. 2) then defeated Anna Kate Anderson, 6-4, 6-3.

The Mustangs received singles points from Sharapova (No. 3), Yana Erkeeva (No. 4), Bulgakova (No. 5) and Mary Wright (No. 6). Erkeeva's 6-2, 6-0 victory over Emilia Borkowski was the match-clinching point.

The Mustangs return to Dallas for a match versus No. 48 New Mexico on March 20 at 3 p.m. at the SMU Tennis Complex. The match will be the first of three home matches for SMU that weekend.
