DALLAS -- The SMU women's tennis team earned its second consecutive shutout, defeating East Carolina, 4-0, on Saturday morning at the Ann and Brad Brookshire Family Pavilion at the SMU Tennis Complex.

"East Carolina is a very good team," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We talked about playing with energy and controlling the controllables, and I thought we did a good job of that today."

SMU improved to 11-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in American Athletic Conference play, while East Carolina fell to 11-8 and 1-3.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, winning the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and 2 positions. Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Dasha Sharapova (No. 1) earned the Mustangs' first victory of the day, beating Michelle Castro and Nicole LaDuca, 6-2.

Hristina Dishkova and Holly Verner (No. 2) clinched the doubles point for SMU, defeating Maria Gomez and Neena Wanko, 6-4. With the win, Dishkova and Verner tied the school record for single season doubles wins (22).

"They've been the backbone of this team for three years now," said Gyulai of Dishkova and Verner. "This is one of their goals. It's a great opportunity for them."

In singles, Mary Wright (No. 5) pushed the lead to 2-0, beating Katie Hoch in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Anna Kate Anderson (No. 2) then brought SMU within a point of clinching, defeating Castro, 6-3, 6-4.

Sharapova (No. 3) secured the match-clinching point for the Mustangs, winning the final three games of the second set to defeat Gomez, 6-4, 7-5.

The Mustangs continue AAC play tomorrow, taking on Tulane at 12 p.m. at the SMU Tennis Complex.

"Tulane plays with a lot of energy," said Gyulai of tomorrow's matchup. "We've seen them before in Conference USA. We just have to match their energy and control the controllables."
