The Week Ahead...
The Mustangs take to the road for the first time this spring to compete at the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay. This is the first time back to the event for SMU since the 2013 season, which was the fourth consecutive season the Ponies made the trip to San Diego. SMU will compete in Varsity 8+, 2nd Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+ events.
Last Time Out...
Creighton/Central Oklahoma - The SMU rowing team won all three Varsity 8 events to defeat Creighton and the University of Central Oklahoma in windy conditions on March 14 at White Rock Lake.
The Mustangs finished over 16 seconds ahead of second place UCO in 1V8+ action, with SMU finishing in 7:53.1 for the victory. The Bronchos clocked in at 8:19.7 and Creighton followed in third at 8:27.0.
In the race prior, the Ponies picked up their first victory of the day in the 2V8+ edging out UCO, once again, but this time in a closer contested race. SMU crossed the line in 8:29.4, while UCO posted an 8:33.2 and Creighton finished in 8:39.8. The final eights race featured an SMU victory over a pair of boats from Creighton. This was the largest margin of victory on the day for SMU as they finished the event in 8:36.7 and Creighton's crews turned in finishes of 9:12.8 and 10:48.8.
Around The American...
The American Athletic Conference includes eight institutions sponsoring rowing for the 2015 season. UCF, Connecticut, Sacramento State, San Diego State, SMU, Temple, Tulsa and Villanova will all compete for the 2015 American Championship on May 17 on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. The winner of the event will earn the American's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Championship in Gold River, California.
UCF earned the first AAC Boat of the Week honor as its Varsity 8+ crew cruised to nine head-to-head wins leading up to the first weekly announcement. In addition to Varsity 8 wins by the Knights, Sacramento State, San Diego State and Temple earned victories in the event.
In its inaugural season, AAC rowing saw Louisville take the team title to earn the automatic bid with 158 points, while UCF (136) and Connecticut (111) rounded out the top three.
Crew Classic Rewind...
The SMU 1st Varsity 8+ crew finished fourth in the Women's Collegiate Varsity Petite final, less than 10 seconds off the winner's pace with a time of 7:07.41. The Mustangs beat Kansas State, San Diego State and Villanova to the finish line, but missed the podium by less than three seconds, with the St. Joseph's crew posting a time of 7:04.92 to edge out SMU.
The SMU 2nd Varsity 8+ finished its final with a time of 7:28.55, 18 seconds out of the top three and just 21 seconds behind the first-place boat. The 2V8+ got faster as the weekend went on, shaving nearly seven seconds off of its preliminary time of 7:35.15.
Mustang Moody...
Sophomore Savannah Moody was invited to the US National Team ID Camp in Chula Vista, California, where the national body identifies possible rowers to compete on the U-23 National Team.
Moody competes in the stroke seat on the Mustangs' 1st Varsity 8+ crew. Following the 2013-14 season, she was named Second-Team All-Region by the College Rowing Coaches Association. During the fall portion of the 2014-15 schedule, Moody helped her crew to a fifth place finish at the Head of the Colorado, and a ninth place finish at the Head of the Oklahoma.
Last season, as a member of the same crew, she was part of four first-place finishes as well as three runner-up finishes. The crew posted its fastest time of the season with a 6:42.5 finish on April 26 against Central Oklahoma.
American Standout...
Junior Miranda Zsigmond, a native of Los Alamitos, California, represented SMU on the inaugural American Athletic Conference First-Team last season. Zsigmond spent the spring season as part of the Mustangs' Varsity 8+ crew, while also racing in Varsity 4+ races during the fall.
The Champ Is Here...
First-year rower Jackie Galloway earned a third-place finish at the US Open Taekwondo Championships, which took place Jan. 20-25 at the Orange County Convention Center. Galloway was also named the 2014 Female Athlete of the Year by USA Taekwondo.
In 2014, Galloway was a collegiate World Champion, Canadian and German Open Champion as well as a member of the U.S. National Team. Her success in 2013 was evident as she took National Championship honors in the United States, Costa Rica and Israel. She was also a Pan American Open Champion.
During the 2012 calendar year, Galloway was named an alternate for the London Olympics and won both Dutch and Swedish Open Championships. She also earned a bronze medal at the World Championship and US Open. In 2011, Galloway was a Pan American Games champion.
